My grandson is 3 and my granddaughter 5 and will be visiting with me quite a bit at the lake this summer. I have NO experience with fishing but would like to share the experience with them.

Does any one have a list of basic contents for a tackle box and recommendations as to what type of poles to get for our use?

Good luck holding their attention for more than about 5 minutes at a time. They'll be more interested in playing with the pole/tackle than watching a boring old cork.
But, no rod/reel combo's. 8' cane pole, 6 pound test line, plastic bobbers, splitshot, small hooks, needle nose pliers to remove small hooks from YOUR fingers, spool of nylon twine with a treble hook to retreave pole from the water, small cooler full of JuicyJuice, camera and a large jar of Patience.

Mack nailed it. If you are talking the younger set, a pole, bobber & hook is about all you need. Let them help you dig some worms for added fun.

Have another family member stand back with the camera. You'll be too busy with the tangled lines and worms.
Also, get a bag of catfish pellets/dog food/deer pellets// or something that sinks. Cast it around your dock a couple of hours before you fish. Draws small Bream/catfish to your hook.
Be prepared with an answer to the question "Why can't we keep him?" when it is asked.

I would highly suggest the Black Widow Cane style pole. 12 or 13 foot length as has line, sinker, float and hook and all in contained in it own storage sleeve.

Believe I have seen them at Wal Mart in Alex City and Academy Sports in Bham. But would check first to be sure. Believe they are like $10 or $12 per pole.

I would suggest getting one of those kits in Walmart that look with the Zebco style fishing real. They usualy have cartoon character themes (i.e. Scooby Doo, Spongebob, etc.) The rod is about 3 feet long. A cane pole is way too long. My children all learned to cast one of these rods on their own at 3 years old. They can be taught if they are interested. My boys are casting 6 foot Zebco rods and they are not even 4 yet. I would get the smallest hooks possible. No bigger than a 1/8" in diameter. Use redworms. They are tougher and stay on the hook better. Only use a small piece of worm on the hook - 1/4" to 1/2". If you use a whole worm the fish will easily steal the bait. Use a bobber. Fish near any shoreline this spring and you will catch some bream. One of my sons will fish all day on the seawall if you let him. Sometimes he will catch 10 to 20 bream. All I have to do is bait the hook and he does the rest.

Toonfisher has it right.. I use a princess rod with gdaughter (4) and spiderman with gson (3).. bitsy hook, split shot and cut up redworm... These rods will actually float for a few seconds, as you will soon learn..

I found that flattening the barb on the hooks makes everything allot easier with kids that age and crickets make the best bait for pan fish. You might be surprised and catch a spotted bass too.

you select, the Magic is that they are fishing (maybe for the first time) with GrandPa!!
Be Patient/enjoy them/ and take pictures. Wonderful memories for you both.
