Let's put things into perspective. The timeframe you reference is totally different from where America finds itself today. America was building as a country and was not experiencing the kinds of forces that are acting today that are being used to divide us as a Nation. We were not being overrun with uncontrollable immigration. Immigration between 1870 and 1900was during the rise of Industrial America,  the largest number of immigrants continued to come from northern and western Europe including Great Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia. These immigrants were becoming one of the most important forces in American life while immigration from Asia and Latin America was much more limited and controversial. As a point of interest, the immigrant population(legal and illegal) hit a record 43.7 million in 2016. Between 2000 and 2016 18.7 million immigrants settlled in America.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           For the last several years our borders have been flooded by immigrants(legal and illegal) with no concern about how "citizens" of this country are affected because we have no "rational" policy on controlling immigration based upon how it contributes to the "well being" of America. Democrats are only interested in bringing in as many immigrants as possible so they can "play and control" them the same as they do blacks in order to "gain" their vote.  If you are a Democrat and will not "admit" that is your modus operandi, I suggest you read an article written by "black" publisher Lloyd Marcus titled "Blacks Still Played and Controlled by Tired Old Democratic Paradigms".(Lloyd Marcus.com)
