Rule of thumb...

In the continental U.S.A. if a snake is swimming on top of the water be very aware that it is probably a viper. If swimming under the surface in fresh water more than likely harmless.

When I was just a poly-wog. My Dad use to say... "There are 2 kinds of snakes... Rattlesnakes and Chickensnakes. If it don't have a chicken in it's mouth, it's a Rattlesnake."
