When I refer to the "govt media" I am referring specifically to the mainstream media in America that is composed of the big three networks and major market newspapers. I could use the the term Pravda but then it gets all confused with the communism thing which is not what this is about.

Historically the 4th estate or mainstream media was intent on "reporting the news". Yes, Walter Cronkite was biased but when compared to the low standards of today his bias was barely noticeable. The news was generally reported as it was with the glaring exception of WW2 when the media actually took sides with America in its war with the Axis (primarily Germany and Japan). But if the President or his administration denied aid to its Ambassador and others in a foreign country and they were killed the mainstream media reported on that regardless of whether POTUS was a Democrat or a Republican and the reporting was generally consistent.

I think this all began to change post WW2 when America's journalism schools were becoming dominated by the left, some of which were outright communists but most were liberals. So the education system began to turn out left leaning budding journalists who over the years have grown into management positions. And we know how liberals love to surround themselves with like minded folks so pretty soon when you asked a journalism student at Columbia why they were there rather than saying they wanted to help inform the public on what was going on in the world most said they wanted to change the world. And during the Vietnam War when the media decided it was an unjust war they took sides and saw the power they had to shape public opinion. Just look at the coverage of the Tet offensive. It was a military disaster for the Viet Cong but our media spun it as a massive victory. And then we had Watergate, where the media learned that through their biased reporting they could bring down a President.

So now with that background here is the answer to your question. Our mainstream media is no different than Pravda, ACN, al Jezeera or any other so-called news organization in a totalitarian government. They no longer consider it their role to inform the public, it is to shape the opinion of the public to see things their way. In this case their way is big government liberalism. They have taken sides. They are no longer the 4th estate, They are a propaganda organ of big government and that is one of the primary reasons they were overtly and obviously covering for Obama. They are an extension of big government and it is their duty to drum out politicians that do not see the role of government like they do. Hence the double standard for the GOP. And they are overtly, openly socially liberal and hence they cover social issues through that template and so anything socially liberal is to be presented in the most positive light, anything negative about social liberal ideas must be suppressed and anything socially conservative must be demonized.

Does that answer why I call them the govt media? Sometimes I call them the dinosaur media because one of the logical outcomes of their bias is financial ruin. Its why they hate FoxNews so intensely. Not only is Fox their opposite but Fox is financially successful. They really hate that. But as Dan Rather said, profits be damned, we should report the news the way we want to and cBS should be willing to lose money if thats what it takes. Typical liberal economic illiteracy and lack of an adult perspective.
