What makes you so sure that we are not doing just that? From what I understand, watching those same shows, we are routinely bombing their positions, as are some of our allies, including Jordan.
One thing I think factors into making decisions on bombings has to do with collateral damage. Americans have no stomach for collateral damage, especially when it involves possible killing of women and children. Our enemies know this and routinely set up in areas where there would be colleteral damage.
To my knowledge, the Joint Chiefs and their staffs do not routinely assign bombing missions. That would normally be assigned to the Theatre Commander in conjunction with his staff based on intelligence assessments and various unit commanders and the CINCCENTCOM and his staff. Obviously, they are speaking on a weekly, if not daily basis and would be briefing the WH as requested.
