Based on Federal Election Commission filings in March and again in June 2020 the Donald Trump campaign sent emails requesting contributions. The solicitation included a box marked "make this a monthly recurring contribution''. Not unusual, except the box was pre-checked as a ''yes'' and the contributors had to physically opt out if they did not want the contribution to be repeated every month. Along comes september and another email solicitation was sent with the same pre-checked recurring contribution box, except in this rendition it was for a weekly charge to your credit card or debit account. Among the contributors was an elderly terminally ill cancer patient who was in hospice care who gave $500, half of his monthly income, and before they were stopped the involuntary payments had gone to $3000 which caused him to have to deal with bounced checks and a locked down bank acct. as well.
The campaign has agreed to refund $123,000 (11% of their contributions)! I have no idea if it is illegal but does even the most ardent Trump supporter think it is OK for the president of the United States to permit this to be done in his name?
