According to the Center for Disease and Prevention, 325,000 people become ill each year from food poisoning and 5,000 die. The Congressional Budget Office said the House bill's requirement for more frequent inspections and other enforcement steps would cost $2.2 billion over five years -- in addition to revenue that would be collected from the food companies' registration fees. Based on $440 million per year and a population of 304 million, that works out to approximately $1.45 per year per person. So, in the spirit of safer food for Astro, Alahusker, Hodja, and Au67, I am sending a check for $5.80 to the FDA to cover your share for safer food next year. Now you can take a Democrat to lunch and say thanks.
