Glad to hear others embrace our 2nd amendment as our family does.
Our place is on Smith Mountain, not far from Manoy and we've seen a few break-ins as well over the past few years. We know who the culprit was for one and suspect him for a few others. Local high school dropout, in trouble with the law on a regular basis... Broke into his own grandmothers place. The sheriff came by our place asking if we had seen anything unusual. When I mentioned seeing the kid but not during the time of the break in, they said to watch out for him. --he went into more detail than what I thought was appropriate but I think he was really trying to make sure we were aware of how serious the situation was-- (Dadeville police and camp hill police know about this guy too...) What bothers me is the lack of presence of law enforcement in our area. I know Dadeville police don't patrol as far down as us (kind of glad for that but it's another story) but you would hope the sheriffs office and city PD would work together. I've never seen a random patrol car in our neighborhood. (Don't get me wrong, I love the Tallapoosa sheriffs department and think they do a great job). To be honest, a lot of lake houses are sitting ducks for vandals the majority of the year.
FYI...This kid may not be the one behind these latest break-ins and I truly hope he's not.
And I'm sorry to use this forum as a soapbox, but I think the real problem in the area is the kids running wild. They have nothing to do. It's the culture in the area too. So many families living on the immediate outskirts of the "lake neighborhoods" are either just barely above poverty level or below it. (Please correct me if I'm wrong...it's just what I've observed...)
I'm not saying these families aren't taking care of their children or not loving them enough...but teenagers want to go out and have fun...and the only thing to do around the lake area for many of these kids is to hunt, fish, sit on a pier or go to the bar. So, in the winter they hunt or go fish at some of the public spots when they can. Well, hunting season is pretty much over...turkey isn't as much fun as deer for the younger crowd...so what else do they have left to do when the places like DARE park close at dusk?
I'm not a local and I'm sorry if I've stepped on a few toes...
And I'm not suggesting us "summertime locals" need to pitch in and help the locals out in order to keep our lake places safe from vandals...I'm just stating an opinion...
Sorry again for ranting on my soapbox!
