Hard to judge but seemed there was plenty air underneath to get out of any tight spaces he might have found himself in. One to three thousand feet would be my guess.
i once worked with a gent who flew in WW II, first for the RAF, then Army Air Corps after the US joined the fray. He had some interesting tales but once told me "the two most useless things to a pilot are the air above him and runway behind him".
