A high idle can create a dieseling effect but 99% of the time this is caused by a lean idle situation. Depending on what carb you have, try opening the idle mixture screws about 1/2 to 3/4 round each, the idle should drop at this point, then turn the idle screw down to a respectable idle speed, and see if your problem doesn't go away!!
