Not sure how many docks we have, but we counted 7,840 individual homes and condos around Lake Martin. Of course, practically all homes have docks.
Lake Lanier has several problems, not the least of which is the Corps -- remember last year the Corps drained two feet of the lake because of a "faulty gauge". Atlanta draws a great deal of drinking water from Lanier, as we all know, but much of that water is not returned to the Chattahoochee River because:
1. 25% of the homes in metro Atlanta are on septic tanks. Atlanta allows whole subdivisions to be built using septic tanks because they want the tax money but won't build treatment plants fast enough. That water is lost to the downstream requirements and has to be replaced with additional Lake Lanier water.
2. Some drinking water from Lake Lanier is subsequently treated by a sewage treatment plant and the water is returned to the Flint River system (a no-no). That water lost to the Chattahoochee River also has to be replaced by Lake Lanier to meet the downstream flow requirements.
Remember the Corps is the approving authority for all this mess, and the Corps and Georgia (Atlanta) recently lost the law suit on appeal to Alabama and Florida. Our friends in LaGrange, West Point, Columbus, and points south are not on Atlanta's side -- they, too, suffer the consequences.
