100% positive if police had showed up in the first 5-40 seconds the hero would be dead as well.  

From what I have been told by police officers is once the situation is over or as quickly as possible - put it away, hide it under a trash can anything to get it out of sight - and talk to the officers, explain the situation, tell them you are armed and what happened.

If they see you with the gun(and firing- or possibly not) expect them to mag dump into you until you stop moving - they will not wait to see if you are the good guy or the bad guy to them your just the person with a weapon.
