I was going through some of my dad's old papers and found two interesting items. The first is a topographical map of the area between Alex City at the north, Tallassee at the southern most part of the map, it shows little further west than Loachapoka and camp Hill to the east and the town of Kowaliga to the west. Its referred to as the dadeville quadrangle. This map was reprinted in 1945, the survey date is 1901-1902. So there is no Lake on the map. It shows the various ferries that crossed the river, Double Bridge Ferry, near Cherokee Bluffs, McCarty Ferry between Irma and Suzanna, Robinson Ferry, Walker Ferry and others as the river turned north westward. It shows the Central of Georgia train line coming out of Alex Cityto dadeville. It looks like the train line changed names in Dadeville to the Macon Columbus and Birmingham line. Anyway, its really neat to see the area pre-lake.
The other document describes reservoirs in the Mobile River basin. Mitchell, Jordan, Martin, Smith and Harris Lakes and their dams are described. Martin Dam shows a drainage area of 2984 square miles. It says" lake is formed by a combination arch and gravilty concrete dam with a riprap earth embankment on left or east end.Spillway is equipped with 20 modified stoney-type gates, 30 feet wide and 16 ft high. Storage began in the summer of 1926 and the powerhouse was completed in 1927. Total capacity at elevation 490.00 ft( top of gates) is 1,622,000 acre-ft of which 1,375,000 acre-ft is controlled storage above elevation of 430 ft. minimum pool. Lake is used for power development. ExTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD. .Maximum daily contents since October 1, 1940 was 1,648,900 acre-ft on April 14 1979 when elevation was 490.69ft. The lowest recorded was 555,000acre-ft was on June 29, 1941 elevation 452.12
Hope this hasn't been too boring-this is an amazing lake with a wonderful rich history and it will survive floods and droughts and so hopefully will we.
