That seems to be a necessary plan these days.  I don't think that now I would make the government my career.  Yes, the salaries are good (at least at the higher levels), but the retirmeent isn't what it used to be, and there is always a chnace that the government will decide to tap into your TSP and leave an IOU, as they did with Social Security.  While I enjoyed my career, now I would just do a few years for the experience and do something else.  It's just too political now.
