This debate was a pretty good expose’ of both of the candidates, although Trump did not blow up completely… he did struggle for answers & fell back on his old tactic of filling the air with a kind of rambling spiel that seems to be his way to 1) buy time & distract from the question he was asked or 2) pretend to be answering. I’m always struck by the feeling that the guy says so much, that in the end you don’t know what he meant.
I bet conservatives wish there was a morning after pill to take after a night like that. Trump showed up for the debate… unprepared & unschooled on policy matters… and found himself putting up a weak defense of why he had used the ‘birther’ issue to further his own interests, why he hasn’t released his taxes, ...even admitting he hasn’t paid taxes…. “that makes me smart”. No, that makes you a leach on society.
Here’s a super wealthy guy (at least he says he is that) who doesn’t pay taxes and crows about it to an audience of supporters who are complaining that their taxes are too high… but have to pay them anyway. People who have to pay taxes are losers, Donald is not a loser.
This morning, Trump is phoning into the conservative media with complaints that the moderator treated him unfairly. And Trump supporters are preparing to concoct story lines about Clinton that cast doubts on her. The truth is…. Clinton looks & acts like a well-prepared candidate for the Presidency, while Trump looks like a blustering blowhard… the kind of guy who thought he could pass the final exam without studying because “I have a good brain”.
I’m still not sure Trump supporters want anything more substantive from him. While his lack of preparation and overall qualifications for the Presidency seem totally obvious to everyone else, his supporters may cling to him simply BECAUSE he is unprepared & unqualified. They seem to think this is a good thing.
That’s a dangerous fantasy.
