I just think the McCain episode is particularly tragic in that McCain has endorsed the party nominee out of unswerving loyalty, even though it means letting Trump's insult pass... a reminder that John McCain still thinks just like he did in the military, loyalty is really important to him... McCain was never my guy on the issues, but his story was a real inspiration to hear. Pity there is so little indignation on the part of others in his party who are watching while he humbles himself before Trump.
That whole episode aside, it's just Trump's personality to do this no matter how vile I think it was. Everybody should pay attention to what it says about him, but what is amazing is how we are normalizing him and tolerating his behavior.
It all started with Trump figuring out that people wanted a candidate who would refuse to be "politically correct", but he seems to be expanding on that theme to include stretching the truth as many ways has he likes and saying whatever pops into is head while he is riffing to a cheering crowd.
I didn't think that was exactly what anti-PC folks had in mind. Going from "we don't need to be politically correct" to "we don't need to be factually correct either" seems like a leap to me.
