Another thought is that, being Saturday, it was a dry run to work out the kinks in case it is really needed.  Wife said that they announced "expedited screening" and told folks to NOT take things like laptops out of the bags.  Also, my wife is usually TSA pre-screen, but not today.  So maybe they were making sure all of the pieces are in place, should there really be an elevated threat level.
