Well, he didnt Just become a Republican - he was around as a Republican during the Barrack Obama elections.  I do believe that people can change their views over time.  Just as the Republican party has moved more to the right, the democratic party has moved further to the left.  Maybe a lot of us are just really independents waiting for the candidate who mostly fits our beliefs, and not entirely fish or fowl.  Frankly, I find it hard to believe that some of the most conservative candidates can do what they claim for much of the same reason.
