I have a friend who owns several Branded gas stastion, usually he averages about $.10 to $.12 per gallon profit. This past summer I called him several times to see what he was making and everytime it was like $.25 to $.27 per gallon and all he was doing was adjusting his price daily to market based on his competitors prices.

So make a long story short this past summer, at least $12 or so in the gas prices was just stations making additonal profits at the expesne of thier customers. But have you ever figured out what a gas station makes on a fill up at day $.12 per gallon and say 20 gallons = $2.40, this barely covers their operating and maintenance costs and cost of money if you charge the gas as it take like 4 days for them to receive their cash form the credit card companies.

Now with that said, Summer of 2005 after all the hurricanes, etc. He was only making like $.04 per gallon on average. So like $.80 on 20 gallons.

In a nutshell the indepedent gas station owner for the most part does not control the price of gas the middle east does and the US corporations just charge what OPEC is charging per barrell, therefore they had windfall profits over the past 2 years or so.
