Congrats on the new purchase, I think you will really enjoy it – but it is NOT an “assault weapon”. An AR is simply a cosmetic replica of an assault weapon, as they operate only as a semi auto (no matter how long you hold the trigger back – you still get only one round downrange). In your military service, you would have used the rifle with a third position on the safety – marked “Full” or “Burst” – that is an assault rifle. I bought my first AR just after Clinton tried to ban them, and they are very accurate, lightweight, and have very light recoil. The day I bought that one, my wife and I went shooting – I was allowed to function test with 3 rounds, my wife cleared that magazine and the remaining two.
Everyone should be prepared, and everyone should take responsibility (that word again) for their own well-being. We keep nonperishable food and potable water for emergencies, a firearm is certainly a like provision – be sure to keep something to feed it as well. For those who feel that the law enforcement personnel are going to keep you safe – try this – figure out what the average police response time is in your area, get a stopwatch and lie in bed. Close your eyes, imagine someone just breached your front door and start the watch. Open your eyes. Now pretend that the police gave been called and count down the time before the first responder arrives. While you are waiting, think of all the fun things that you, your family and your new best friends will be doing together.
Bush moved us closer to Socialism the last quarter of 2008 than I thought I would see in my lifetime, and yes, the Obamanation has fast tracked that direction. Get your emergency supplies while you can; Obama, Pelosi, Holder, Schumer and the gang intend to stop that portion of our economy. If you are too late – no problem, just remember “we are from the Government, and we are here to help you”.
