Was it lack of preparation? Did he forget the campaign commercials that they have been running? Was it hubris? I am wondering if they strategically decided that Romney has well practiced and effective counters to each of these issues? Really a mystery to me that he was so unprepared. Really, if you looked back to the primary debates in 08 he was pretty much left unscathed and left the others to pick each other apart. This is the first time he has had someone challenge him and he was found wanting. But be assured, he will be better prepared next time.

But we have to remember Obama has some very big disadvantages in these debates. First of all he is an incumbent so his record as POTUS is fair game. Second, his record is by any objective measure abysmal. On domestic economic issues all he can do is lie to try and spin how awful it is. On foreign affairs his record of appeasement and apologizing hasn't mollified our enemies, it has emboldened them and the middle east is a complete disaster as a result. Third, me made a bunch of campaign promises when he ran in 08 and he has been a miserable failure there as well, even on some issues where I am glad he failed (i.e., closing Gitmo).

It will be interesting how many of the 65 million watching were undecided or swayable. I suppose over the next week or so we will see what happens in the polls. One thing for sure, I hope the Romney campaign donation team is ready for all that cash. This was exactly the boost he needed after weeks of over coverage of flawed polls meant to dampen enthusiasm for his campaign.

Kudos to Rob Portman who really did a great job prepping Romney. I wonder if he threw in the 3,000 uhs, ahs, ums just to make it realistic?
