No, I'm not missing the point.

Any strategies that will be worked out between BP and the government will be done at a level a lot lower than the CEO and the President. Honestly, meetings at that level are rarely more than grip and grins, everybody makes nice and then they leave it to their staffs. The biggest nightmare for BP is the PR one -- this is hardly their only well, and business I'm sure is going on as usual. Keep in mind that only a small portion of what is going on behind the scenes is likely being reported. It's in the interest of media to continually report on how bad things are going, and totally ignore the rest.

Now, where I do see a failure is the government taking so long to respond to the permit request to build berms. Total failure on the part of government to be responsive. I'm sure the COE would say that they did it in "record" time, having to study it and then staff the approval and send it up the chain -- but someone signifigant as the CoE should have been granted authority to circumvent even expedited "normal".

The only thing that I am concerned about is getting the oil spew shut down. I don't care if Obama talks to BP CEO or if Obama goes to the Gulf to "listen to the people" and walk around in his good shoes on the sand. And it doesn't matter a lick to me whether McCain would have dealt with it better or not. He's not the President, we are where we are, and it seems rather sad to me for people to be focused on "what might have been" rather than being totally appalled by what is happening with the oil.
