Sounds like someone is in for a nice Christmas present. Couple of comments. Lake Martin has several different types of fishing. Spotted and Largemouth bass, stripe bass, crappie etc. Your equipment, to some extent, will depend on the type fishing you would like to do.
In addition it depends on how you plan to fish, from the bank, boat or kayak. My wife and i fish quite often from a Hobie Kayak and boat and fish mostly for spotted bass using 100% artificial bait. I'm sure there are a number of folks that could help advise you on the different types of equipment. Bass Pro catalog is a good place to start but would also advise some help, suggest good quality gear but probably not top end unless you just want to spend a bunch of money. Probably buy the gear for the price of a guuide. Would be glad to give a couple of suggestions.
My two cents worth, take the Generous fishermans offer for your husdand to go fishing . I would think he would have plenty of gear he could use. And then he would have a better idea of equipment needed. Let us know if we can help.
