Your post has been sitting here like an island unto itself..maybe because when you start thinking about the possibilities the answer becomes YES ...the BCS was flawed...YES the system prior to the BCS consisting of opinions of journalists and coaches was flawed..and YES the current system is flawed as much as any of the others. I am still bothered by the arbitrary removing of TCU from the 3rd rank when all they had done to deserve removal was to show even more improvement and strength. We hear so much about how good and right NCAA basketball has managed the task of crowning a champ but YES it is also very flawed because ultimately it is humans with their many built-in biases who determine the field and most importantly where and who they will be playing. Do the best two teams in the NCAA tournament necessarily get a chance to play each other...you could argue that either way. Until human and team performances can be completely and accurately translated into mathematical quantities, one system is almost as good as the other. It's the dadgummed humans that screw things up...my story and sticking to it....
