I think it is too easy to try to affix the blame for what has happened to our political opponents. I don't think it any one thing that has led to the current situations in Syria and Iraq - it is far more complex than that. Some of it has roots in when we armed the mujihadin when the Russians were in Afghanistan, some of it has to do with actions taken by the Bush Administration, some of it has to do with situation that the current adminstration has poorly dealt with. Some of it has nothing to do with us at all, but rather extremists within the Muslim world set out against more moderate Muslims. Sect against sect. Yes, they like to stand up and curse us, shock us and try to blame us, but their real objective is the total control of Muslim countries and we are only an obstical to their real objective.
We have had no grand strategy for dealing with militant Muslims who hate us solely for the fact that we exist. But I'm not sure that anything we do will have a lasting effect on the end game - we can crush them for now but as long as one of them is still standing, there are endless recruits among those who have been educated to hate Western culture and have been brainwashed to believe that only the most radical form of Islam is the right one. The people in these countries need to rise up against ISISL and take back their country. We can help them, but we can't solve it for them.
