I have let the commentary of the day wash over me and thinking about it. I'll be the first to admit that I have some liberal leanings on certain social issues (but not fiscal, defense or foreign policy), but in thinking about the election of Trump, I think that maybe the social changes that have been put forth by Obama and company are really too far, too fast and not what the mainstream citizens want or are ready to accept. For example, I was thinking about Gay marriage. It doesn't bother me at all, but maybe for a lot of people just experiencing them coming out of the closet, the marriage thing was just too much. People no sooner wrap their minds around gays being in public and wham, they are hit with now they want to get married. And we got over that and then we're worrying about what bathroom the transgenders will use. I just don't think mainstream America is ready to deal with the transgender issue, must less what bathroom they will be using. But they have been pushed along by the perception that they must accept it, when they just really found out about it.
And listening to a talk today about the 6 weeks of maternity leave. It's not that people don't think it is a bad thing, per se, but smaller businesses just can't do it and people didn't want to make it a law.
And then there is "PC". It's not that anyone wants to hurt anyone's feelings, but when everyone's walking around on eggshells, worried about how not to offend anyone or be accused of being politically incorrect. I think the vast majority of people think this has just gone too far. That we must pretend not to notice that a person has a handicap that may prevent them from being an effective employee. I don't think the majority of people mind making accomodations for the disabled, but when it becomes mandatory it becomes a resentment. Trump did not make fun of the disabled - he made fun of one reporter who was harassing him, who also happened to be disabled.
The majority of us grew up with parents who weren't our "friends", we were taught responsiblity, manners and that we would have to work for whatever we would achieve in life. But there is a new generation who has never been taught this. And they get upset when they don't get what they want, because they have been told that they should have it' And it is okay to trample on our values, becuase the only thing that is really required is for "me" to become self actualized. No one has ever spoke the unvarnished truth to them, no one has ever uttered a non-PC word to them, and they're feelings are always paramount. (like the students at Yale who were too upset to take their exams because Hillary didn't win the election).
Up until now, we have been brushed aside by Obama, by Hillary and those of their ilk. In the meantime, our government no longer serves the peop, but shuts down because they are so gridlocked. they don't think they should have to compromise or even negotiate.
