Lakerlady, the boat & barge you've seen are the two divers who have a permit from Alabama Power Company to salvage trees that were cut down before the lake filled and are now lying on the lake bottom. This is their second year of operation and they've pulled up more than 300 trees (heart pine, oak, elm and whatever else was growing back in those days). The wood is beautiful...one pine had 206 rings in addition to the 80-plus years it had laid on the bottom.
They have two old pontoon boats rigged with steel frames and battery-powered winches. They pull the trees up one at a time, cut off any remaining branches, and transport the trees to a drop-point near StillWaters. Later they are pulled out, taken to a sawmill for cutting & kiln drying, and then used for flooring. Expensive flooring I might add.
I usually work with them a couple of days a week. Too old to dive so I help with ropes, cables & chains. When you see the dive flag, please remain at least 100-feet away in case a diver or a tree is coming up. And if you are boating past, please consider that your wake causes difficulty to their operations.
If you see a white Zodiac boat tied up alongside the barge, that's mine and means there should be three people aboard. If all three of us are on deck you can approach closer to chat and see what's going on. But be aware that occasionally a "floater" tree is dislodged from the bottom and can surface on its own...often in a quite spectacular fashion. Not a pretty thought if it comes up under your boat.
One more thing. If you see their barge & boat traveling east in Blue Creek with a load of trees, please give them lots of room. The rig is tough to maneuver when loaded.
Hope this helps.
