You do not mention how you are going to water your plants. Put a LOT of thought into that before you start digging in plants.Late July and August at LM can be brutal with heat and no rain, sometimes. Unless you are at the Lake fullTime, while you are not there the annuals will suffer, even some of the newly planted permanent stuff.
Full sun? Barberry shrubs, small, brilliant yellow or burgundy. Tough plant. Banana plants/trees. Knockout roses.
Shade/Partial Sun? Ferns or Begonias.
Deer love them all, so be prepared to find them shredded.
