I got an early Christmas present Sunday morning. From my back porch overlooking the lake in the Dead Timbers area (big slough directly across from Chuck’s) I got to see a mature bald eagle circle over the water for about 30 seconds. I was walking through the house getting ready to go to the in-laws house for the Christmas holidays when a large bird caught my eye through the window. I noticed that it had some white on it. So I immediately assumed that it was going to be an osprey. After walking onto the porch, my assumptions were corrected. The large bird was actually a bald eagle. I stuck my head back inside and called for my wife to come quickly. We watched the eagle for about 30 seconds circle our small slough directly in front of us (about 50 yards away) and only about 25 feet above the water. I could tell that he was trying to catch something in the water and after a couple of attempts he finally slashed the surface of the water but returned with nothing. As soon as he pulled up, a kingfisher shot out of the water and darted down the slough with the bald eagle following behind. I am not sure if he was fishing for the same fish that the kingfisher was fishing for, or if he was trying for the kingfisher, or both?

I have seen eagles before, but never on Lake Martin and never this close and in action. Has anyone ever seen bald eagles on this side of the lake (Still Waters, Dead Timbers, Susanna Slough, Blue Creek Area)? If so, do you know were they nest?
