From the outside looking in, I have an opinion that I think everyone should hear. I do not live on a lake in Alabama or own a boat that will be banned by this law. I just like to read the FORUM. Ya’ll can be pretty funny at times. So here goes. This all started as a development on Lake Harris, that the APCO only owns around 3,500 acres. APCO’s, Willard Bowers, vice president of environmental affairs, stated in a previous interview with The Daily Home, that stakeholders on Lake Harris wanted to ban HOUSEBOATS!!!!!!! He also stated that stakeholders on Lake Martin wanted to be part of this legislation. Then, APCO said the only way they would support this bill would be if it included all APCO lakes without locks. This leads to SB487 and HB756, which prohibit the use of residence boats, recreational vessels longer than 30 feet and six inches, or recreational vessels with engines in excess of 500 horsepower. Which would include some or almost all of the cabin cruisers that run on Lake Martin (most of which are docked at Russell Marine Marinas) Do you think that will effect Russell’s income?? I’m thinking, PROBABLY SO!!!!! All of a sudden things take a turn (in favor of Russell). A substitute bill is introduced. I read today that only three lakes are now involved: Harris, Martin and Weiss. Why would that be??? The new bill will grandfather in all boats longer that 30 feet, 6 inches but will ban boats longer than 26 feet, 11 inches that are capable of exceeding 60 MPH. Does this make any sense??? I heard this was a bill to help overcrowding. Do the unsafe, (because of the size) vessels come into play like Jet Skis and paddleboats? NOT!! So, who is in the others wallet??? APCO or Russell. With that said (WHEW!!!), I am at home alone with two children while my husband is in IRAQ fighting for our FREEDOM. Does the State of Alabama know the real meaning of FREEDOM?? Anyone who supports this bill is as selfish and un-American as it comes.
