Are you experienced with cats for lake sailing? If you want one for the beach, disregard the following comments and unsolicited input.
First of all, I love Cat sailing. I've had several different Cats over the years and they are a blast when the winds are strong and constant. Unfortunately, that is very rare on Lake Martin. Even when we have a good breeze, the winds swirl and usually offer many dead spots. There are times when big water areas are ok, but again they are few and its often hard to get back in more secluded areas (or even home depending on your location). You can't beat a Cat for beach fun, but they can drive you crazy on a lake if you want a regular sailing fix.
Let me offer up a great idea for lake sailing for those interested. My latest Hobie is called a Tandem Island. It combines a sail boat and kayak along with Hobie's Mirage drive system. It's great for lake use because you have 3 propulsion methods available. Google Hobie Tandem Island and take a look. It's the best lake sailing experience I've ever had on a consistent basis and I can use the boat all year. If anyone wants more info on this boat, send me an email (do the same if you have one). I'd like to start a local Tandem Island club and I've never seen another one on Lake Martin..... BTW, this is also a great beach boat but won't reach the same high speeds as a big cat in strong winds. Expect a top end in the 10-15 knot range depending on experience and wind conditions.
Either way, happy sailing!
