What percentage of boat owners winterize their boat and leave it on a hydrohoist during cold weather? If you leave it out, do you take any extra steps to help inside the engine compartment?

I take mine off the lift and store it inside. I still winterize however. As far as winterizing and leaving it out on a lift, it should be no different than winterizing and storing it outside in the weather on a trailer, you just need to be very sure that you have gotten antifreeze in all the right places, and not left any water in those places.

Depends on your preference. Lots of people use fuel stabilizer when storing for more than a month. Many use fogging oil to protect the inside of the engine. Pretty much I just try to crank them over every few weeks and keep the water drained out of the block and manifolds. On outboards you do not want to leave the engine tilted or the water will not drain out of the engine and lower unit properly. Pretty much just fuel stabilizer will satisfy the outboards. You should replace the water pump impeller about every 3 years or more often.......

I guess the direction I was going was trying to see if there were any "tricks" that would make it safe to leave the boat out, like leaving a light on in the engine compartment or covering the foot of the I/O to protect it some. Things like that...
Does Duncan Bridge still have enough water on the ramp to pull out a ski boat?

personally,...I haven't been up there in a while. As for the light in the engine compartment...that was suggested to me by a member on another board. It is what I'll do if the weather dips below 30 for a significant amount of time....say, maybe more than 4 hours over night. The temperature of the water alone will keep things from freezing and maybe a thermal blanket is all that may be needed. I have a pontoon and a pleasure boat in the water and use them both year round so I have to stay on top of the weather conditions when it gets extreme. The fact that it is highly unlikely that the water in the lake will freeze means that the portion of a motor that is in the water is pretty much protected....probably down to near zero degrees....I wouldn't worry much about lower units in the water until it gets below 20 for several hours. As for the engine itself...I would worry and baby sit it with whatever is necessary to keep the block and manifolds from cracking ....even if it's just a light bulb in the engine compartment. Good insulation in the engine compartment will go a long way...or even just packing DRY insulation around the engine.
